Pontiac Engine Special Builds

Motor City Muscle has created a new generation of performance enhanced Pontiac engines. Read about some History of Pontiac Performance and the GTO below.

Milts original 1966 factory race car, seen here at the York U.S. 30 Drag-O-Way in Pennsylvania for the Super Stock Nationals (Left). Milts 1966 replica is shown powered my a Motor City Muscle powerplant (Right).

Milt Schornack, one of Detroit's top mechanics in the 1960s, who pioneered the Ram Air system and, as a tuner and driver, became the face of Pontiac's legendary GTO. Motor City Muscle has been responsible for the powerplant in the "new" 1966 Pontiac GTO that Milt has put together. 1966 was a good year for Milt and the Royal Team. The '66' finished the year winning its class at the Super Stock Nationals at York, PA. Perhaps one of the most famous Royal Bobcats was this Grenadier Red 1964, built on November 2,1963, and eventually shipped to Royal on November 8. What happened to the car during that six-day period is open for conjecture; however, it most likely spent a few days next door at the Pontiac Engineering garage before finding its way to Royal Oak. Equipped with the 348 hp Tri-Power and four-speed transmission, the GTO was given the "Royal Treatment" with the assistance of Milt and then delivered with an identical GTO painted blue over to Car and Driver magazine. Car and Driver wrung both cars out at Daytona, rigorously testing both cars.

The Royal Bobcat GTOs accelerated from 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds and turned the quarter mile in the low-thirteens. Car and Driver made no bones that the cars were tweaked by Royal, and pronounced the Pontiac GTO to be the equal of its Ferrari namesake in its March 1964 issue, which elicited howls of protest from the magazine's European-oriented readers, but provided Pontiac with reams of copy and great PR. It was after the Car and Driver test that GTO sales went ballistic.

Motor City Muscle has developed a special series of performance enhanced Pontiac engine builds. These engines are designed for top flite restorations that want to build more power. We use the original blocks, heads and intake systems to deliver a top performing motor in a perfect restoration environment. We can tailor your engine build to suit whatever needs you see fit. Below are a few of our more popular packages, as they apply to 389,400 and 455 Pontiac engines.
A base engine build consists of remanufacturing back to factory specifications. Including : Machine work, fit and finished work. New parts include: Pistons, rings, bearings, block/head plugs, cam, lifters, pushrods, rocker nuts, valve springs, valves, timing set, oil pump, gaskets/seals, ARP fasteners.

Stage Description Cost
Stage I Base engine remanufacture. Balanced and blueprinted rotating mass. "Bobcat Treatment" valvetrain/cylinder head configuration
Stage II Base engine remanufacture. Balanced and blueprinted rotating mass. Forged pistons and increased compression ratio. Cylinder head porting and modified camshaft profile.
Stage III Base engine remanufacture. Balanced and blueprinted rotating mass. 468 cubic inch Stroker kit with H-beam connecting rods. Forged pistons and increased compression ratio. Cylinder head porting and modified camshaft profile.
Stage IV Base engine remanufacture. balanced and blueprinted rotating mass. 468 cubic inch Stroker kit with H-beam connecting rods. Forged pistons and increased compression ratio. Cylinder head porting and modified roller camshaft profile.

All of our engines feature an updated rear main seal design, modifications to the oiling system for increased engine bearing life. On non stroker builds we also upgrade the rod bolt hardware to prevent the common failure of the weak factory bolts.
